During parts of this book I kept zoning out and losing focus, I’d have to reread over and over again and I thought ‘Ugh, should I continue?’ I did press on and it quickly got better, a classic “whodunit” with several twists I didn’t see coming until the very end。

Kind of a tired plot - college professor cheats on his doctor wife w/wacko student who is obsessed first w/her HS boyfriend, then shifts her sights to the professor。 Poor professor。。。。just can't resist。。。。y wife works too much, doesn't spend enough time at home, doesn't care about me。。。。。both get pregnant at the same time, then student commits suicide, but is it suicide??? This book was just ok。 Kind of a tired plot - college professor cheats on his doctor wife w/wacko student who is obsessed first w/her HS boyfriend, then shifts her sights to the professor。 Poor professor。。。。just can't resist。。。。y wife works too much, doesn't spend enough time at home, doesn't care about me。。。。。both get pregnant at the same time, then student commits suicide, but is it suicide??? Enjoyed this police mystery。 The story was a mix of relationships-academia and personality disorder-among other things! Relatable characters for the most part。 Interesting。 。

Well written and, gasp!, this read has been well proof read with the exception of 'Luminol' which should have been capitalized。 To my reading pleasure, there were not any other obvious proofing errors to annoy me。 Nicely done!Professionals, academics, students, marriage, love, lust, deception, murder。 This novel has it all wrapped into twists and turns。 It wasn't difficult to figure out this was not a suicide, but who was the killer? Clues were provided early in the story。A woman with an agenda Well written and, gasp!, this read has been well proof read with the exception of 'Luminol' which should have been capitalized。 To my reading pleasure, there were not any other obvious proofing errors to annoy me。 Nicely done!Professionals, academics, students, marriage, love, lust, deception, murder。 This novel has it all wrapped into twists and turns。 It wasn't difficult to figure out this was not a suicide, but who was the killer? Clues were provided early in the story。A woman with an agenda is always trouble; a lonely man is usually vulnerable。 (Take Meghan Markle and Harry in current drama and tragedy unfolds。) I thoroughly enjoyed the literature references (i。e。 Dido, Medea, Romeo & Juliet and others) which I read many, many years ago and have been incorporated into this mystery。The protagonist and Cody are unlikable characters; while all other characters are likeable in spite of their human failings。 We all make mistakes and learn from them。 Maggie's character developed the most throughout the storyline as she dealt with the unexpected and shocking news from Jack。 Jack has always been a very thoughtful man, but was seduced by his student。 Even then, he refused to blame Taryn。 While I wasn't surprised about the killer, Charlie was the character who surprised me in his life as a brute cop。Enjoyed this book and plan to read more of Tess Gerritsen/Gary Braver novels。 Short chapters; easy read。 。。。more

I made it about 50 pages into this one & couldn’t go any further- this one is just not for me。 I was hopeful after reading the blurb, but it makes me cringe so hard & I can’t get past it。 Jack seems like such a creep & his obsession with Taryn in the first few chapters is so weird。Maybe this one gets better & the weird narration from Taryn, Jack, and the cop in the prologue just added to the story, but I’m not sticking around to find out。

Not my favorite Tess Gerristen book。 Storyline is a bit stale。 I was okay until the main character turned psycho and all stalker。

ChoicesWhat a tangled web we weave。 As Frankie says, it only takes a moment for your whole life to change。 To go from being loved to hated, unwanted to wanted, happiness to tragedy。

DNFHated everyone in this book。 They're all shallow and self-absorbed。 Couldn't find anyone to root for, and at 20%, I give up。 DNFHated everyone in this book。 They're all shallow and self-absorbed。 Couldn't find anyone to root for, and at 20%, I give up。 。。。more

The characters were tropes, the twists were predictable, every event in the plot was too exaggerated to be credible, and the book is simply unable to tackle the complex topic it tries to because of poor writing。

In CHOOSE ME, Tess Gerritsen and Gary Braver examine how different people respond after experiencing betrayal and abandonment。 How, for example, might a middle-aged police detective live her life after her husband dies in circumstances that at best can be seen as a betrayal of their marriage? How differently might a college coed respond to being dumped by her boyfriend after her father left his family years before? We also must consider that the very act of having an affair, cheating on one's spouse, is certainly a kind of abandonment --- of sacred commitments, promises, moral values and even common human decency。Frankie is the Boston detective who is on the scene after the supposed suicide of Taryn Moore, a beautiful college student with a promising future。 We find out right away that Taryn had been heating a frozen mac and cheese dinner right before she died, which seems strange for someone so despondent that she would end her life before consuming the hot meal。 We also learn that she wrote an essay, "Hell Hath No Fury: Violence and the Scorned Woman。" Little do we know at this point the importance of the piece and the irony of the title。The novel is presented in two timelines, BEFORE and AFTER, and the whole story is shared from three points of view: those of Frankie and Taryn, both of whom understand abandonment, and Jack, the college professor who teaches a seminar for seniors, "Star-Crossed Lovers。" Here his students read classics like THE AENEID, THE ROMANCE OF TRISTAN AND ISEULT, MEDEA and ROMEO AND JULIET, and he thinks of it as "a sexy package of love, lust, and ultimate tragedy。" This is irony in the extreme considering what will transpire between himself and his most dedicated student, Taryn。Gerritsen and Braver don't pull any punches when they introduce Taryn。 We learn immediately that she has no compunction about entering her ex-boyfriend Liam's apartment using the key she never returned。 She snoops around, and there is something disturbing about her inability or refusal to admit that their relationship is over, perhaps because Liam is the second man in Taryn's life to betray her。 Plus, Taryn and Liam have been together through high school and almost four years of college。 It had been understood that they would have a life together。 Taryn had been counting on it, and Liam has betrayed her。Now Taryn is dead。 Her body fell five stories to the concrete pavement below her apartment on a cold and windy night。 Her cell phone is nowhere to be found, and if not for that strange fact, the detectives would have labeled her death a suicide without a second thought。 But Frankie, the mother of two teenagers, knows how important their phones are to them。 Where is Taryn's phone? Why is it not in the apartment or broken into pieces on the pavement? As overworked as Frankie is, she is determined to find out what really happened to Taryn and get justice for her。Everyone in CHOOSE ME has their flaws, some of which are immediately more apparent than others。 Jack is a sympathetic character until we see his fatal flaw。 His marriage is strained by his physician wife's horribly long working hours。 It leaves them little time together, and although they have wanted children, her most recent miscarriage has been emotionally devastating for them。 So when the young and beautiful Taryn throws herself at Jack, we can understand why temptation rears its ugly head。 But we cannot forgive him for going through with the infidelity。Taryn is not a very sympathetic character as we watch her clever, dispassionate ability to use those around her。 Her lifelong insecurity being from the wrong side of the tracks isn't enough to overcome our repugnance at her behavior, desire for revenge, selfishness and complete narcissism。Then there's Frankie。 She just plods along, never taking a vacation, always worrying about her daughters and their nights out, wanting to do the right thing for Taryn。 Other characters may have had a reason to want Taryn dead。 What about Cody, the unattractive friend of Taryn who would do anything for her。 But at what cost? We may not like any of the main players, but we can admire them and pity them for their faults。 Most of all, we want to know what really happened to Taryn。This solid mystery forces us to consider not just the significance and validity of the #MeToo movement but also the aftermath of such an affair。 What about vengeance? What is justice? Is Jack as bad as others who might use positions of power for sexual conquests? Does it ultimately matter? And what about forgiveness? Can the characters here forgive others for acts of betrayal? These kinds of questions and reflections make us better individuals。 How much should forgiveness play a role in our lives? What would we have done if we were in the same situation as those in CHOOSE ME?Reviewed by Pamela Kramer 。。。more

Tragic Suicide or nootA cop mystery about a college student and a professor sharing English lit classes。 However, if you think you know what happened already, I doubt it。 You should read this book and see if I’m right。

Woah!! I haven’t read one of Tess Gerritsen’s books in a long time, and she never disappoints。 This was a great thriller, with lots of suspense。 I absolutely loved the writing style weaving back and forth between before and after。 Definitely going to look into some books by Braver。

Marsha Lambert

Suspense/Thriller I truly enjoyed this story。 Some things I could see coming and some I never would have guessed until it was all spelled out in the end。 Well worth reading。

No choiceLife is full of challenges and sex seems to be the biggest it can make and ruin lives!! I guessed the outcome early on despite lots of red herrings which made me skip some of the descriptive parts of the story。 But an easy and engaging story。

Tikėjausi žymiai daugiau, bet。。。 o ir vertimas - tragedija。

Decent book - rushed endingI liked the literature discussed, liked how each character (except the father/killer cop) had a relatability。 Did not like the rushed ending, the ex cop just confessed right away ? Kind of a scooby doo ending。 At first seemed like the victim had plotted a revenge, like her heroine, but she got robbed of that 。。。。。

A good murder mystery with believable characters and a surprise ending。

A Must ReadTerrific story。 One of those you cannot put down because you just have to find out what’s next。 The literature class setting was a bonus as I thoroughly enjoyed the class interaction around the star crossed lovers from ancient lit!
